A History
of the Friends' 501(c)(3) "Movement"

First, a little bit of history. Members of Friends
of the Library groups from various San Jose branch libraries have been
collaborating with
the goal of developing and submitting the necessary documentation to become Non-Profit
Corporations. There have been several meetings held to discuss the
501(c)(3) project:
 Saturday, June 24, 2006 at Alum Rock Library
Wednesday, July 12, 2006 at Almaden Library
Wednesday, August 16, 2006 at Rosegarden Branch Library
Thursday, October 12, 2006 at the King (Main) Library
Tuesday, October 24, 2006 at the Rosegarden Branch Library
The meetings covered how to develop Articles of Incorporation and
Bylaws. Several groups shared their documentation, which is posted below.
Several meetings covered filling out IRS Form 1023, which includes many
questions necessary for consideration as a nonprofit organization.
Some of the questions require a narrative to be attached; examples
of these will be included on this website as time permits, and they will be available for your perusal.
